Peter Brown at the BBC ..........
Q: Where did you grow up?
A: I grew up in and around the streets of Carlton, Nottingham, in the East Midlands region of the UK.
Q: What made you realise that music was your path?
A: I was greatly influenced by music even as a child – my mother was a pianist, my uncle was a cellist and because of that connection I suppose I paid more attention than the average kid in music classes at school. I soon began to excel and was greatly encouraged by the music teacher, who I think appreciated that I had more of an interest and more of an empathic understanding of what he was trying to get over to the class than most other pupils. I was also keenly interested in English and was able to use my love of the intricacies of word usage by writing poetry and lyrics . Obviously my interest in music and English was a useful combination for creating songs.
Q: What path did your musical career take?
A: I’ve got quite a long pedigree now in the music industry, formally as a performer, session musician and a musical director and latterly as songwriter, lyricist and composer.
As a child, I was originally classically trained on the piano and later as a teenager, received professional tuition on the guitar. I sharpened my skills at the school of hard knocks for many years as a professional musician touring on the big venue circuit and gigged as a studio session musician at the BBC playing guitar and bass. So understandably I’ve got extensive experience and a thorough understanding of the fickle needs at the sharp end of the music industry.
Q: How would you describe the music that you typically create?
A: Having had a very mixed and broad lifetime of musical experience I strive to write good quality music across multiple genres, often writing bespoke pieces/songs or lyrics for the needs of individual artistes.
Q: Who are your biggest musical influences?
A: In no particular order: Alison Moyet, Phil Collins, Elton John, The Who, Beatles, David Bowie, Abba, George Michael, Queen, Crowded House, Alice Cooper, Meatloaf, Sting.
Q: What makes your music unique?
A: Precision in the art of creation - careful crafting of a complete experience with each song - building on tradition with innovation.
Q: Is your music assessed / critiqued by anyone?
A: Yes, the International Songwriters Association (see link below) provides first class support to song writer members in assessment of new material, music industry advice and "How to" guidance and much more essential stuff.
Q: Has there been one particular moment in your musical career that you're most proud of?
A: Working for Hal Carter touring in the UK as a backing musician with Billy Fury, working with Gene Pitney, Neil Sedaka, performing at the great Wembley Stadium in the London Rock n Roll Show.
Q: What's next for you?
A: To go on writing songs and instrumental pieces; moving more into the contemporary sector of the music industry and to keep on providing the best service I can to my clients.
